[00:00] <stellar-slack> @eva: It _really_ is
[00:00] <stellar-slack> OK folks we're about to start
[00:00] <stellar-slack> 3...2...1
[00:01] <stellar-slack> *What is one thing you wish people knew about digital currency?*
[00:02] <stellar-slack> We know its hard
[00:02] <stellar-slack> We know it's complicated
[00:03] <stellar-slack> IMO we’re still very much at the “*anything at all*” stage. When I tell people about it I get “Why do we need this?” “Does anyone accept it?”
[00:03] <stellar-slack> Some good sources we heard from earlier today: http://www.npr.org/sections/money/2015/01/16/376967946/episode-253-gold-standard-r-i-p
[00:03] <stellar-slack> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PDylgzybWAw
[00:03] <stellar-slack> http://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2014/05/future-payment-systems/370902/
[00:03] <stellar-slack> ouuu I _love_ planet money.
[00:04] <stellar-slack> @emilyhorsman: what do you usually tell them?
[00:04] <stellar-slack> we also <3 planet money
[00:04] <stellar-slack> so much
[00:04] <stellar-slack> Alex Blumberg's new startup podcast is also very good
[00:04] <stellar-slack> hello Stellarians(?)/ how do we called ourself?
[00:04] <stellar-slack> Explorers!
[00:04] <stellar-slack> who knows
[00:04] <stellar-slack> explorers for now
[00:04] <stellar-slack> but
[00:04] <stellar-slack> Who go to *space camp*
[00:04] <stellar-slack> @vanessa: I just finished the first season of that!
[00:04] <stellar-slack> I think we're open to new ideas
[00:04] <stellar-slack> heheh
[00:04] <stellar-slack> I also <3 freakanomics
[00:05] <stellar-slack> @zealord: you've made some awesome instructional materials
[00:05] <stellar-slack> hope you don't mind having us toot your horn
[00:05] <stellar-slack> yes!
[00:05] <stellar-slack> The latter I don’t know how to answer frankly, the former I usually mention a few things. I like the stats on how many people in developing nations can’t have bank accounts. Most people don’t care about that. Talking about bank fees tends to work. I also like the angle of “Like look, eventually we’re gonna want a unified digital currency, can we get going on this already?"
[00:05] <stellar-slack> i'm going though Graydon posts and don't know what else could we add.
[00:06] <stellar-slack> @vanessa: @eva you're welcome, as always;
[00:06] <stellar-slack> and I've pointed folks towards the twilio tutorial you shared
[00:06] <stellar-slack> @emilyhorsman: so bringing it back to what affects them personally?
[00:06] <stellar-slack> Pretty much
[00:07] <stellar-slack> https://www.twilio.com/blog/2014/08/stellar-cryptocurrency-sms-notifications.html
[00:08] <stellar-slack> @emilyhorsman: I like your style
[00:08] <stellar-slack> @charles: can I put you on the spot? :) What's one thing you wish people knew about digital money?
[00:09] <stellar-slack> @vanessa: I try, but I would definitely like more talking points
[00:09] <stellar-slack> @charles: how do you usually teach folks about Stellar
[00:09] <stellar-slack> Frankly _I’m_ in need of talking points
[00:09] <stellar-slack> kk I have a deck that may help
[00:09] <stellar-slack> https://speakerdeck.com/mozzadrella/how-an-educator-came-to-3-crypto
[00:09] <stellar-slack> If you move to the end
[00:09] <stellar-slack> love this slide deck :lt3:
[00:09] <stellar-slack> there's a piece about how people who make the digital products need to be the people who *use* the digital products
[00:10] <stellar-slack> because right now there's a huge disconnect
[00:10] <stellar-slack> and since there's a 278 *billion* dollar credit gap for women
[00:10] <stellar-slack> it's going to pretty wild once women are included
[00:10] <stellar-slack> because right now in the developing world, the easiest way into the labor market for women is entrepreneurship
[00:11] <stellar-slack> and they need access to cash, and access to credit
[00:11] <stellar-slack> I have so many thoughts on women + crypto
[00:11] <stellar-slack> several pieces of writing in the works
[00:11] <stellar-slack> and mayyybe a presentation
[00:11] <stellar-slack> it's very close to my heart
[00:12] <stellar-slack> and I think it's this huge opportunity for the world to leap forward - it isn't about getting women to be entrepreneurial. It's just removing the barriers, and watching them go for it.
[00:12] <stellar-slack> I think that's actually the thing I want people to know about digital currency
[00:12] <stellar-slack> it isn't just a vehicle for investment, a la Bitcoin. It isn't even just a currency. The protocols behind it can make very real differences in the lives of literally billions of people around the world.
[00:13] <stellar-slack> @eva tweet anything you write on women + crypto to me and I will RT the hell out of it
[00:13] <stellar-slack> http://techcrunch.com/2015/06/16/the-next-fintech-sandbox/
[00:13] <stellar-slack> YESSS
[00:13] <stellar-slack> I need to do that
[00:13] <stellar-slack> :lt3:
[00:13] <stellar-slack> I mean, folks come into this field from many entry points
[00:13] <stellar-slack> @vanessa: you have a rad background
[00:14] <stellar-slack> @charles is interested in helping non-profits get donations smoothly
[00:14] <stellar-slack> awww, thanks
[00:14] <stellar-slack> I just go where the curiosity wind takes me
[00:14] <stellar-slack> doesn't she?
[00:14] <stellar-slack> I won’t lie, I want crypto to take off as a step towards getting rid of capitalism entirely >.>
[00:14] <stellar-slack> I think re-imagining money from a perspective of abundance
[00:15] <stellar-slack> love that sentiment
[00:15] <stellar-slack> will be a huge shift
[00:15] <stellar-slack> it's so novel that it barely makes sense the first time you hear it
[00:15] <stellar-slack> because money = scarce, right? That's what people think of it, anyway
[00:15] <stellar-slack> when I was teaching SF folks and they did this exercise to re-imagine money
[00:15] <stellar-slack> like something is valuable because not everyone can have some
[00:15] <stellar-slack> everyone came at it from a place of abundance
[00:15] <stellar-slack> Has anyone here read _Accelerando_ by Charles Stross?
[00:15] <stellar-slack> not yet
[00:15] <stellar-slack> NOOOO tell me!
[00:16] <stellar-slack> I haven’t finished but like, _do it_ :)
[00:16] <stellar-slack> It’s CC licensed: http://www.antipope.org/charlie/blog-static/fiction/accelerando/accelerando-intro.html
[00:16] <stellar-slack> totally up everyone’s alley here
[00:17] <stellar-slack> awesome, I'll bump it up my reading queue
[00:18] <stellar-slack> The protagonist (in the first third of the book?) is all about post-scarcity economics and makes it his life goal
[00:18] <stellar-slack> oh wow
[00:18] <stellar-slack> that sounds fascinating
[00:19] <stellar-slack> He “makes others rich for a living"
[00:19] <stellar-slack> it’s a really fun read
[00:19] <stellar-slack> if we ever have a Stellar book club, that would be the first I'd want to do
[00:19] <stellar-slack> Oh that's awesome
[00:19] <stellar-slack> OMG
[00:19] <stellar-slack> That would be an amazing idea @eva
[00:19] <stellar-slack> :)
[00:19] <stellar-slack> would you be in?
[00:19] <stellar-slack> so much yes
[00:19] <stellar-slack> I'm super into open organizational structures too
[00:19] <stellar-slack> I would happily make a little website for it
[00:19] <stellar-slack> containing a list of articles and queue of books
[00:19] <stellar-slack> if wanted
[00:19] <stellar-slack> http://www.reinventingorganizations.com/
[00:20] <stellar-slack> oh my gosh
[00:20] <stellar-slack> that sounds... fantastic
[00:21] <stellar-slack> As I've been learning, I've realized that digital currency is about, like, 8 different domains at once
[00:21] <stellar-slack> basically
[00:21] <stellar-slack> implicitly interdisciplinary subjects are the <3
[00:21] <stellar-slack> but - that means everyone has something that could make them fall in love with it
[00:21] <stellar-slack> It's like, economics, math, global development, organizational culture, urban planning
[00:21] <stellar-slack> its totally wild
[00:21] <stellar-slack> social good, hard problems, tech, finance, entrepreneurship
[00:21] <stellar-slack> @eva slack/twitter DM me tomorrow about book club?
[00:21] <stellar-slack> ooh okay!
[00:21] <stellar-slack> will do <3
[00:21] <stellar-slack> you are awesome
[00:22] <stellar-slack> What else would people recommend for the book club?
[00:22] <stellar-slack> @andrew is big on this book: http://www.amazon.com/Payments-Systems-U-S-Carol-Benson/dp/098278970X
[00:22] <stellar-slack> I dunno if we'd want to read books that aren't directly finance-y, but I <3 Promise of a Pencil (read it on Joyce's recommendation)
[00:22] <stellar-slack> it's about starting a nonprofit
[00:23] <stellar-slack> @wynlim recommends http://www.amazon.com/Poor-Economics-Radical-Rethinking-Poverty-ebook/dp/B007CI81IQ/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1434586994&sr=1-1&keywords=poverty+economics
[00:23] <stellar-slack> Anything that plays with economics on a cultural level would be rad
[00:23] <stellar-slack> http://www.amazon.com/Blue-Sweater-%C2%A0Bridging-between-Interconnected-ebook/dp/B00CXK14DW/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1434587020&sr=1-1&keywords=blue+sweater
[00:24] <stellar-slack> I think @wynlim also recommended this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Payback:_Debt_and_the_Shadow_Side_of_Wealth
[00:24] <stellar-slack> yeah, I'd like to show people that econ doesn't need to be dry
[00:24] <stellar-slack> it's culturally steeped
[00:26] <stellar-slack> Also @cmcgarry digs http://www.amazon.com/Reefer-Madness-Drugs-American-Market/dp/0618446702
[00:29] <stellar-slack> And @jessica digs http://www.behindthebeautifulforevers.com/
[00:29] <stellar-slack> Jeez
[00:29] <stellar-slack> we are such a book-positive crew
[00:30] <stellar-slack> omg, i second @wynlim on Payback. reading now and it's so hauntingly, beautifully conceived.
[00:30] <stellar-slack> planet money, freakonomics, and books all in one chat, hell yes
[00:30] <stellar-slack> hehhe
[00:30] <stellar-slack> diverse media ftw
[00:30] <stellar-slack> oh *cool*, Payback is by Atwood
[00:30] <stellar-slack> yes!
[00:30] <stellar-slack> _definitely_ going on my list
[00:30] <stellar-slack> Atwood is the best
[00:31] <stellar-slack> that might be the very next book I read when I finish up these two I have on the go
[00:31] <stellar-slack> yay!
[00:31] <stellar-slack> bumped to the top of the queue
[00:31] <stellar-slack> What are you reading now @emilyhorsman?
[00:31] <stellar-slack> I got the ebook, but never actually got around to it
[00:32] <stellar-slack> @vanessa: _Accelerando_ as mentioned and I’m at the tail end (but neglecting it) of _The Chronicles of Amber_
[00:32] <stellar-slack> which is totally unrelated fiction hehe
[00:32] <stellar-slack> he he
[00:34] <stellar-slack> Behind the Beautiful Forevers is so good for a portrait of socioeconomic factors at work within a community—how they play out in real people's lives, over time.
[00:35] <stellar-slack> in terms of shorter form content, the next billion is the most exhaustive coverage of financial inclusion: http://nextbillion.net/
[00:35] <stellar-slack> I adore nextbillion
[00:35] <stellar-slack> it's little dives into very specific financial inclusion initiatives
[00:36] <stellar-slack> so you'll hear about the challenges/progress of an org doing smallholder farm loans in India
[00:36] <stellar-slack> I like the macro things, but it's great to hear really specific stories, too
[00:37] <stellar-slack> (also a NextBillion article is a more reasonable commitment than a 300-page nonfiction book :P )
[00:38] <stellar-slack> this is their special channel for FI too: http://nextbillion.net/fi/
[00:39] <stellar-slack> Also @sciyoshi hi, I don't think we've met
[00:41] <stellar-slack> Oh neat I hadn't heard of that before
[00:44] <stellar-slack> so, follow-up question for everyone: what do you wish you knew about digital money?
[00:45] <stellar-slack> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y25qTTzWD08
[00:46] <stellar-slack> @zealord: I'm curious, how would you describe the community that is interested in digital currency where you live? What is the most interesting aspects for them?
[00:47] <stellar-slack> it's quite diverse here, Joyce
[00:50] <stellar-slack> i love to get into a open, reliable& connected financial platform
[00:50] <stellar-slack> are there specific elements of digital currency that are particularly interesting there?
[00:51] <stellar-slack> It's certainly more diverse than most sectors
[00:51] <stellar-slack> @eva @vanessa have either of you listened to season 2 of startup yet?
[00:52] <stellar-slack> most notably the nature of borderless transaction, Joyce
[00:53] <stellar-slack> I actually haven't listened to it yet
[00:53] <stellar-slack> I've been getting into so many other podcasts I just haven't gotten around to it yet
[00:53] <stellar-slack> Is it mostly finance people interested? Developers? Mainstream people? Families w overseas relatives?
[00:53] <stellar-slack> I remember from our talk, @zealord that a lot of people you know are into bitcoin
[00:54] <stellar-slack> I'm a lil disappointed with it. Especially since the founders of the new startup are all women
[00:54] <stellar-slack> but the humanitarian mission was something that really appealed to you
[00:54] <stellar-slack> @joyce I am most certainly not a finance person
[00:54] <stellar-slack> Finance people (in banking/FIs) are actually more laidback and conservative here, Joyce
[00:55] <stellar-slack> @emilyhorsman: you mean you're disappointed in spite of that?
[00:55] <stellar-slack> I'm a trans woman, broke, write code, have never invested, have used PayPal about a dozen tines ever
[00:55] <stellar-slack> *nods*
[00:55] <stellar-slack> @eva when they said the founders of the company they're doing were women I was like HELL YES but it's a dating company and a bit normcore for me
[00:55] <stellar-slack> ah, got it
[00:55] <stellar-slack> yeah, dating as a market isn't especially interesting to me either
[00:56] <stellar-slack> by the way @zealord I've been drafting the curriculum for a stellar mooc :)
[00:56] <stellar-slack> it's kind of hard to chat in parallel; may i DM you, Joyce.
[00:56] <stellar-slack> Yeah. Listening to ep5 right bow and it's kinda shitty
[00:56] <stellar-slack> that'll be awesome.
[00:56] <stellar-slack> do you want to see the curriculum?
[00:56] <stellar-slack> @vanessa what platform will the MOOC be on?
[00:57] <stellar-slack> Still tbd
[00:57] <stellar-slack> I feel like it should be as accessible as possible
[00:57] <stellar-slack> Can I put forth khan academy as my strongest recommendation?
[00:57] <stellar-slack> I'm sure they would love this
[00:58] <stellar-slack> Totally intersecting circles
[00:58] <stellar-slack> And frankly I've had a lot of experience with Coursera and edX and just...eh.
[01:01] <stellar-slack> I can see that
[01:01] <stellar-slack> Why Khan academy?
[01:02] <stellar-slack> Sal, John Resig and Pamela are really good people who care about accessibility. It's far more encouraging of a self paced pick and choose study and it feels far more open than Coursera/edx
[01:02] <stellar-slack> *nods*
[01:03] <stellar-slack> Plus khan academy is playing with way more OSS and community and modern stuff
[01:03] <stellar-slack> Coursera and edX feel very traditional and closed
[01:04] <stellar-slack> Pam Fox is awesome
[01:04] <stellar-slack> Going to call it a day, folks
[01:04] <stellar-slack> gotcha
[01:04] <stellar-slack> @emilyhorsman: can I ping you about future ed stuffs?
[01:04] <stellar-slack> _totally_
[01:05] <stellar-slack> @emilyhorsman: def want to keep chatting about this stuff with you in future, and super appreciate you taking the time to share all this thoughtful awesome stuff :)
[01:05] <stellar-slack> Thank _you_
[01:05] <stellar-slack> thanks everyone for coming out, and thanks to the people who just watched/read, too :)
[01:05] <stellar-slack> np!
[01:05] <stellar-slack> You peeps have been super open and engaging
[01:05] <stellar-slack> thank you! That means a lot :lt3:
[01:10] <stellar-slack> Thanks eva. It's a big/tough topic and we could hardly hit the answer (digital currency) without a 4 hours economics 101 walkthough (on monetary history chapter).
[02:09] <stellar-slack> i like this 4 minutes intro to digital currency of Robleh Ali: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CxDKE_gQX_M
[05:25] <stellar-slack> http://launch.stellar.org|launch.stellar.org down?
[05:30] <stellar-slack> working now
[05:46] <stellar-slack> anyone got some examples of things people have made with stellar?
[06:01] <stellar-slack> https://reveal.me/ has to be the most high profile one, they just got $1.5M in funding
[06:02] <stellar-slack> here's a list https://www.stellar.org/community/contributions/#Projects
[06:02] <stellar-slack> cool, yeah reveal has got me reading into stellar
[06:02] <stellar-slack> looks like nothing else much in terms of building custom currencies
[06:03] <stellar-slack> http://getstargazer.com is mine, that’s a desktop wallet
[06:03] <stellar-slack> cool
[06:04] <stellar-slack> nice site :)
[06:04] <stellar-slack> http://venom.pollen23.com/ was a proof-of-concept I made a while ago
[06:04] <stellar-slack> how does that work?
[06:05] <stellar-slack> i'm wondering if you could create a custom currency that would run on the stellar ledger but never use the stellar currency itself
[06:05] <stellar-slack> is that similiar to what reveal is doing?
[06:05] <stellar-slack> The last one? I generate random transactions that I submit to the network, then the webpage listens to the network and renders them
[06:06] <stellar-slack> Just a demo, no real product.
[06:06] <stellar-slack> interesting, just text
[06:07] <stellar-slack> @sohail: kind of.. You need a minimum of Lumens to pay for the transactions etc, but something like 26 XLM per user lasts “forever"
[06:07] <stellar-slack> okay, great
[06:08] <stellar-slack> that is very interesting...
[06:09] <stellar-slack> thanks dzham
[06:09] <stellar-slack> np!
[06:09] <stellar-slack> i suppose any company that uses a rewards program
[06:09] <stellar-slack> could benefit from assigning it as a digital currency
[06:13] <stellar-slack> yup, that’s one application :)
[06:14] <stellar-slack> or turn any existing upvote web app into a currency that can be redeemed or used in some way
[06:14] <stellar-slack> It would make a lot of sense to users I guess, you’d use one account to keep all your reward balances
[06:15] <stellar-slack> ah, but the gateway would be the one issuing and controlling the currency no?
[06:16] <stellar-slack> yup
[06:16] <stellar-slack> so i couldn't relaly put my airline points and my bank points in one account
[06:17] <stellar-slack> i think reveal's idea of encouraging engagement is probably the best
[06:17] <stellar-slack> Well, assuming all of them used Stellar you could use one account to hold them all
[06:17] <stellar-slack> engagement or sales
[06:17] <stellar-slack> oh, they'd be able to see everything on their stellar account?
[06:18] <stellar-slack> The gateway? Yeah, they can get a list of all accounts who hold balances with them
[06:19] <stellar-slack> a gateway generating a pair of keys for a user doesn't require the user to join stellar to redeem/use them right?
[06:20] <stellar-slack> or even, can a gateway make the currency unavailable to stellar accounts?
[06:20] <stellar-slack> Correct. The user doesn’t need to know
[06:21] <stellar-slack> As a GW you can control who holds your currency, so you can limit to people you have authorized.
[06:21] <stellar-slack> Let’s say, for KYC/AML
[06:21] <stellar-slack> yeah, boom okay
[06:22] <stellar-slack> :)
[06:22] <stellar-slack> dzham you the best
[06:22] <stellar-slack> its basically an on the fly custom ledger
[06:23] <stellar-slack> No worries, just remember me if you need work done on Stellar :)
[06:23] <stellar-slack> i got you
[06:23] <stellar-slack> be interested in doing a hackathon project?
[06:23] <stellar-slack> i'm an ios/rails dev
[06:24] <stellar-slack> Yeah, it’s really versatile.. If you don’t mind having everything in the open that is.. Otherwise, you’d probably go for a private ledger system
[06:24] <stellar-slack> Or just a private Stellar network :)
[06:25] <stellar-slack> right, right
[06:25] <stellar-slack> i think there's a lot of value you can offer businesses
[06:26] <stellar-slack> Tooting my own horn again, http://pollen23.com/pass-it-pass-it/
[06:27] <stellar-slack> But to be honest, for that use-case you WOULD go private.
[06:28] <stellar-slack> toot away
[06:29] <stellar-slack> so what disadvantages come with a private implemenation?
[06:29] <stellar-slack> node decentralization?
[06:30] <stellar-slack> if the values/currency are encrypted, wouldn't that provide enough anonymity?
[06:32] <stellar-slack> I’m not sure that would work, since the ledger maintains balances for each currency you hold
[06:33] <stellar-slack> So you’d need to make addition work in the encrypted domain
[06:34] <stellar-slack> I think the whole Bitcoin sidechains thingamajig is somewhat related to that, I might have to read some papers
[06:35] <stellar-slack> blockstream?
[06:36] <stellar-slack> yeah
[06:42] <stellar-slack> i think between the currency id and the value number you'd be able to make transaction history untraceable no?
[06:46] <stellar-slack> that’s the more pragmatic approach, yes :)
[06:47] <stellar-slack> nice, okay
[06:47] <stellar-slack> i'll need to think about it a bit more
[09:31] <stellar-slack> I need help with stellard from github (https://github.com/stellar/stellard)... I have run vagrant and wait for more than 24h to sync with network but when I want to call method e.g. account info I get error not sync to stellar network.
[09:31] <stellar-slack> How do I debug this?
[17:08] <stellar-slack> welcome @bordman and @mrripper
[21:39] <stellar-slack> Bonjour @tbrooke!
[21:39] <stellar-slack> Welcome to our crew :)
[21:52] <stellar-slack> Bonjour - How do I create an account - I have been trying for about an hour either the captcha isn’t right or when I get it and paste text it say invalid captcha
[22:11] <stellar-slack> @tbrooke: are you by any change running behind Tor? what browser?
[22:42] <stellar-slack> Wow - good call - I was using Chrome - I tried Firefox and it just asked me to confirm that I’m not a robot and I’m not so I’m in. Looking forward to learning about stellar !
[23:22] <stellar-slack> welcome to Stellar, @tbrooke!
