[03:34] <stellar-slack> [moving convo abt non dev stuff from dev to general]
[03:34] <stellar-slack> @epsilon: let me know if you have any feedback on the rest of the melbourne talk. im still working on ways to make the importance of these systems very clear to the public
[03:34] <stellar-slack> epsilon [8:32 PM]
[03:34] <stellar-slack> I enjoyed it. Hammering in the underserved aspect is def the way to go, so I reckon you nailed it.
[03:34] <stellar-slack> joyce [8:33 PM]
[03:34] <stellar-slack> Ya, a lot of people don't connect the dots on why infrastructure impacts access to services
[03:34] <stellar-slack> epsilon [8:33 PM]
[03:34] <stellar-slack> We're a different world, that's fer sure.
[03:36] <stellar-slack> It's good to hear how these systems will affect *other* peoples - not just those of us who want to buy a coffee with a Bitcoin, etc.
[03:36] <stellar-slack> We have no clue what it would be like to be unbanked
[03:37] <stellar-slack> Stellar is more than "just another Paypal"
[03:37] <stellar-slack> much more
[03:37] <stellar-slack> exactly.
[03:39] <stellar-slack> what is humbling in all this is when we talk to folks building things in other places, like Praekelt in south africa, and when we ask why they want solutions like this, their answers are very real. like for one of their programs, they want wallets so the ministry of health can help women get bus fare to go to the clinic while pregnant
[03:39] <stellar-slack> their "why" is healthcare
[03:41] <stellar-slack> west china also has a large population, hundreds millions, needs help
[03:42] <stellar-slack> Yeah.. it really is quite amazing how a system such as Stellar can help in many aspects of "life in general".
[03:42] <stellar-slack> the bus fare idea was bloody awesome
[03:43] <stellar-slack> pay the ticket if they use it for the right reason -- then they *will* use it.
[03:43] <stellar-slack> ya for sure
[03:43] <stellar-slack> just a brilliant compromise
[03:44] <stellar-slack> @lab where in china do you live? (prefaced by, you live in china right? )
[03:47] <stellar-slack> i'm in beijing and can't afford a africa trip.
[03:47] <stellar-slack> very cool - my mom lives in china (but I am korean)
[03:49] <stellar-slack> only less than one hundred miles away from beijing, there are lots of poor villagers
[03:49] <stellar-slack> is she lives in beijing too?
[03:49] <stellar-slack> Ya, true. what is interesting to me is the differences in rural poverty in china vs other countries
[03:51] <stellar-slack> the infrastructure in many villages in china is basic but there. roads or a school building
[03:52] <stellar-slack> whereas when I was traveling in kenya, when you leave nairobi (which is a international city), even basic infrastructure disappears quickly
[03:52] <stellar-slack> my mom lives in shenzhen
[03:53] <stellar-slack> which is also amazing...the electronics markets there fuel the :earth_asia:
[03:53] <stellar-slack> it's good for her heathy
[03:55] <stellar-slack> beijing is poisoned.
[03:55] <stellar-slack> speaking of electronics, what is the internet/mobile penetration like in the places you visited in Africa?
[03:56] <stellar-slack> mobile phones are everywhere, ppl have more than 1 sim card tho and swap usage based on what deals are offered for minutes and data
[03:56] <stellar-slack> (lil known secret, i love dual sim card phones but havent figured out a good use for them here in the US since we are all on subscription plans)
[03:57] <stellar-slack> mostly feature phones, but in cities, many smart phones as well
[03:58] <stellar-slack> where do you live @epsilon ?
[03:58] <stellar-slack> Australia
[03:58] <stellar-slack> was hoping to get down to Melb. for the talk but shit happened
[03:58] <stellar-slack> oh dang! ahh ok
[03:59] <stellar-slack> well, if i end up that way soon, i will let you know. we got invited down to melbourne for another thing but its hard to schedule w the launch
[03:59] <stellar-slack> i LOVED it down there
[03:59] <stellar-slack> woulda been good to give that Kiwi (Sean) a punch in the arm
[04:00] <stellar-slack> sounded like the crowd loved you too
[04:00] <stellar-slack> (or did you edit in that resounding applause?)
[04:01] <stellar-slack> aww thanks. i think ppl there were really nice and supportive. they even had someone do sketches of the talks live. let me try to find mine

[04:06] <stellar-slack> wow they're fantastic
[04:06] <stellar-slack> i thought that was really cool:)
[04:06] <stellar-slack> whoever does those has to think and draw fast
[04:07] <stellar-slack> if they were doing those on the fly then you are definitely getting the word across plain as day
[04:08] <stellar-slack> ya they draw them as the speaker is up - its insane
[04:11] <stellar-slack> did yas get to a surf beach while down here?
[04:15] <stellar-slack> oh god i wish. didnt have any time in melbourne and when i was in sydney, it was so so so windy that everything was blown out
[04:16] <stellar-slack> aww bummer. There's always next time.
[04:17] <stellar-slack> for sure!
[04:54] <stellar-slack> link to the melbourne talk?
[04:59] <stellar-slack> disclaimer: it was my first time ever giving this specific talk. https://vimeo.com/116907959
[05:01] <stellar-slack> there was a nice short one that came out from my london trip that you dont need to get popcorn to watch
[05:01] <stellar-slack> let me find that
[05:02] <stellar-slack> ^ that one is worth the watch
[05:02] <stellar-slack> 5 min-ish
[05:02] <stellar-slack> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GfDZIhD1Mo
[06:28] <stellar-slack> @joyce: saw the long one, loved it
[06:57] <stellar-slack> joyce: very cool talk with or without the popcorn. Always fascinating to hear about how money works in developing nations
[07:04] <stellar-slack> wish I had a pizza gateway
[11:18] <stellar-slack> Yeah, I could gateway my home brews!
